Publisher Participation with NSDL

The NSDL Core Integration at Columbia team works with academic and scholarly publishers and educational software firms, Pathways teams, and other experts to present and develop publisher bibliographic information and content across the dynamic digital library network.

Publisher content development efforts underway include attaching original pedagogy and academic context to publisher materials; aligning publisher materials to concept maps and/or benchmarks for deployment through Pathways collections and exhibit sections of nsdl.org, and enriching publisher materials through select resource alignments from flagship Pathways collections and the broader NSDL data repository.

During the fall of 2007, the Library's team at Columbia embarked on the first of several educational modules that will present landmark research papers from refereed journals in full text, introduced through essays written for level 11-14 students by subject experts. The first of these "Classic Articles in Context" modules, on global warming, is being curated and authored by Dr. James Fleming of Colby College. The concentration thus far can be seen at http://wiki.nsdl.org/index.php/PALE:ClassicArticles/GlobalWarming. Launch is planned for May 2008.

Subsequent modules in chemistry, presenting the evolution of plastics/polymer chemistry; and physics, looking at giant magnetoresistance, the research area of 2007 Nobel Prize in Physics; are underway with the Chemical Heritage Foundation and the The Journal of Chemical Education Digital Library (Chemistry Pathway) and the American Physical Society, respectively.
