Learning Application Readiness (LAR) Background to the NSDL

Learning Application Readiness (LAR)

Date: Wednesday, April 27, 2011
Time: 12:00 pm Eastern Time
Audience: NSDL community members
Presenter: Katy Ginger

The session explained the concept of Learning Application Readiness (LAR)---the evolving NSDL approach for addressing how educational resources, collections, and their related metadata are aligned to educational goals, curriculum, or professional development needs of users, and how readily those resources and collections can be embedded in tools and services that educators and students use. This approach requires attention to curation, availability, and correct use of metadata fields to enable programmatic embedding. Targeted to attendees of a May 2011 LAR workshop, the session provides good background for all on LAR as a set of criteria applied to collection development, curation, and management.

Learning About Your Digital Collection From Users

Learning About Your Digital Collection From Users

Date: Thursday, December 16, 2010
Time: 1:00 pm Eastern Time
Audience: NSDL community and others
Presenter: Flora McMartin (Broad-based Knowledge LLC); Glenda Morgan (University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign); and Josh Morrill (Morrill Solutions)

NSDL community members McMartin, Morgan, and Morrill provide an overview and tips for adaptation and administration of their NSDL User Survey instrument, designed to help digital collection developers understand the use of their online collections, and the characteristics and preferences of their users. Developed through large scale tests on various NSDL Pathways projects as well as in campus and disciplinary settings, the survey instrument can be modified to meet the unique needs of those who provide and support digital collections. Managers of digital collections, repositories, and libraries can use survey results to learn how their users think about a collection, and the features that users view as critical or important. Results also provide insight into how users value the contents of a collection and their perceptions of what constitutes high quality in digital learning resources.
