The purpose of this lesson is to introduce students to measuring with both the Standard Ruler and the Metric Ruler. Six attached worksheets will give students practice on measuring. A PowerPoint slide show is provided to introduce the pieces of a ruler. Working with their partners, students will complete worksheets representing equal portions of the inch (i.e. 1/4 and 3/4, or 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, and 7/8). This lesson provides background information for teachers and instructional procedures. Copyright 2005 International Technology Education Association

Main Curriculum Tie: Career and Technical Education Introduction Standard 10 Objective 3 Recognize engineering, manufacturing, and construction processes and technology. Materials: I have created 6 worksheet that give students practice on measuring. I also have a simple PowerPoint slide show that can be used to introduce the pieces of a ruler. Attachments Measuring_1.pdf Worksheet that give students practice with fourths of an inch and the half of an inch. Measuring_2.pdf Worksheet that give students practice with eights of an inch. Measuring_3.pdf Worksheet that give students practice with sixteenths of an inch. Measuring_4.pdf Worksheet that give students practice with the all fractions of an inch to a sixteenth accuracy. Measuring_Metric.pdf This worksheet can be used to introduce the millimeter. Measuring_mm.pdf Worksheet that give students practice with millimeters. Measuring.ppt A simple PowerPoint on the Inch. Measuring.pdf A pdf file of the simple powerpoint of the inch. Background For Teachers: The teacher should have a sound understanding of the standard inch and of the metric system. Intended Learning Outcomes: Student should understand and be able to use both a standard and metric ruler or measuring tape. Instructional Procedures: Using the PowerPoint presentation introduce student to the inch. Stress that the line only work with their partners, the other lines that represent equal portions of the inch, i.e. 1/4 and 3/4, or 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, and 7/8.After completing the slide show, review just the quarters and have them complete Measuring 1. Then Review eights and have them do Measuring 2, Review the sixteenths and have them do Measuring 3. Measuring 4 can be used as a test of the inch. Introduce the metric system and the millimeter. Have them complete both the Measuring Metric worksheet and Measuring mm.
