Resource Title:Problems with a point
Description:This World Wide Web(WWW) site, maintained by the Education Development Center, Inc., is designed to complement and support existing curricula by providing a resource for teachers who use, or are only beginning to use, a problem-centered approach. This resource is also intended as support for parents and tutors who utilize problem-based learning in out-of-school settings. Problems with a Point are designed to help students in grades 6 to 12 learn new mathematical ideas by building on old ones and covers topics such as number, algebra, discrete mathematics, geometry, statistics, and calculus. Each problem or sequence has its focus on one mathematical idea, but many show connections with other problems. Problems are classified by topic, time required, suggested technology, required mathematical background, and habits of mind that students develop or use as they work. The habits of mind include modeling, proving, conjecturing, and finding analogies. In a sample problem on the Pigeon Hole Principle, students are told that thirteen integers are given and must prove that there are two numbers among them whose difference is a multiple of 12. Synopses of the problems are keyword searchable. Answers and solutions are provided, and many problems include hints. Abstracted 07/01. (Author/MM).
