This applet features an interactive grid for forming rectangles. The student can form a rectangle and then examine the relationships among perimeter, area, and the dimensions of the rectangle as the rectangle dimensions are varied. Using options for set area, set perimeter, and line of constraint, students can see the results when one or more variables is held constant. The applet also allows users to trace changes when using a set option. Copyright 2005 Eisenhower National Clearinghouse

| Description | The Middle School Portal 2: Math and Science Pathways (MSP2) supports middle grades educators with high-quality, standards-based resources and promotes collaboration and knowledge-sharing among its users. Educators use MSP2 to increase content knowledge in science, mathematics, and appropriate pedagogy for youth ages 10 to 15. MSP2 employs social networking and digital tools to foster dynamic experiences that promote creation, modification, and sharing of resources, facilitate professional development, and support the integration of technology into practice. MSP2 is a project of the Ohio State University College of Education and Human Ecology, National Middle School Association, and Education Development Center, Inc., and is funded by the National Science Foundation. The partners integrate resources, tools, and services across projects, and support multiple methods of resource discovery to meet the needs of this audience. |

Rectangle: Area, Perimeter, Length, and Width Description Simulation Send comments to Kristen Carvell Description This applet is great for studying the relationships between perimeter and area and lengthand width of a rectangle. Use the Set Area and Set Perimeter options to hold the area, perimeter, or both constant. Use the Line of Constraint option to draw a line and allowonly rectangles with their upper right hand corner on that line. Use the trace optionto trace that same corner. The trace is most useful to use along with the Set Area and Set Perimeter options. Simulation Use a 14 by 18 graph Use a 70 by 90 graph Applet Source: RectPerim.java , Written by Kristen Carvell.
