How can P and S waves predict the inner structure of the Earth? This activity page, part of an interactive laboratory series for grades 8-12, introduces students to the movement of P and S waves through the Earth. Students activate four seismographs that send out P and S waves and watch as the waves are reflected and refracted while moving through the Earth. From the results and provided information, students see how the movement of P and S waves predicts structure within the Earth. Interactive questions are provided throughout the tutorial. Students also investigate the nature and properties of the Earth's interior, including temperature, pressure, and density near the core. Copyright 2005 Eisenhower National Clearinghouse
