dlese.org
This website takes the complex ideas of astronomy and makes them fun and easy for younger children to understand. The Planets Section highlights each planet in our solar system by answering the following questions: where is it?, how big is it?, can I see it?, how did it get its name?, what is it made of?, what's it like on the surface?, and does it have moons?. An image is included for each planet as well as planetary information for the current month with sky maps. A puzzle section has word games about astronauts, missions, and moons. The Sky Facts section gives general information about eclipses, meteors, and red shift. Links are provided for additional information.

Using this resource
| Teaching tip | - This website is a great resource for educators, students, and even parents. The MN Academic Standard that this website focuses on is Space Science. A resource like this will be beneficial to students because it is interactive and adapts to childrens level of comprehension. There was an option on this website that I haven't seen on any other website, it gave the option to enlarge the text. This is a great adaptation to student's who may be struggling readers. Activities, puzzles and worksheets are available to complete on the website or to print off for use in the classroom. Student's can choose the topic of the word puzzle that they want to comlete. If the student begins to struggle with the puzzle that they choose, the website offers to give hints. Student's would be able to explore this website on their own and develop an understanding of constellations, the planets, as well as many other topics that deal with the universe. An entire unit could be planned based off of this website because of the wide variety of information it provides the teachers and students. This website also provides a completed calendar of which days of the month you will see a full moon and what planets are visible during that month. I plan on using this website as a resource when I introduce a unit on the universe.
- This website explains in great detail what the universe is and helps students to figure out this abstract concept. The site creates a great way for students to interact with maps, planets, and constellations. The text is easy to follow and students can work by themselves or with a partner. The site also asks the students engaging questions. Under each category it gives the students a glimpse of what the universe is and the things in it.

| Description | The Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE) mission is to improve the quality, quantity, and efficiency of teaching and learning about the Earth System, by developing, managing, and providing access to high-quality educational resources and supporting services through a community-based, distributed digital library. Intended users include students, educators and citizens of all ages, in both formal and informal learning environments. The collection favors resources that convey linkages and connections; the general with the specific, theory with evidence, global with local, and that demonstrate the application of science to solving real world problems. This includes providing access to Earth data sets and imagery, and the tools and interfaces that enable their effective use. DLESE resources are community-contributed, by individuals, organizations, and formal collection efforts. |

We're glad you're here, and we hope you enjoy your visit to the site. The Universe is a place that is vast beyond imagining, and what we will try to do is help you understand a little more about it. There are several sections to the site, but none of them takes a terribly long time to read, and all of them should be easily understood by kids of all ages. Grownups are welcome, too, as long as they promise to behave. Enjoy Your Visit! If this is your first time here, you may want to visit the Site Information section first. If you are looking for something in particular, you will probably be able to find it either in our Site Index or the Site Map. At the same time, some of life's most fascinating journeys are the ones we don't plan. Astronomy For Kids is back! After a long absence, the site has been restored. We hope you enjoy visiting Astronomy for Kids. Learn about our planetary neighborhood in the Planets section. Although our part of the Universe is fairly small, it's where we happen to live and a very interesting place. In the Sky Wonders section, you can learn about some of the most awe-inspiring and thought-provoking objects that are in the Universe. Everything from eclipses to conjunctions is covered here. In the Constellations section, you can learn about the pictures that the stars draw in the sky for us. You will also learn that some of the constellations have what appear to be stars in them that are not stars at all. If you are just getting started in astronomy, like we all are, there are some tips and resources in the Beginners section that you may find useful. There are some pictures of what we think are some of the sky's most fascinating objects and events in the Postcards section. You can send your friends one of these images on an electronic postcard. The Sky Maps section will not be updated on a monthly basis, but we've left up a page you you can see all the things that happen to our skies during the month.
