To use this applet to model linear regression, the student can enter up to 50 points by clicking on a graph of the first quadrant. The applet displays a red line passing through the point representing the average x and average y values. A scroll bar is used to change the slope of the red line to approximate a line of best fit. With a button click, the applet also can display a blue line showing the calculated best fit line. The equations for the red approximate best fit line and the calculated blue best fit line are displayed along with a thermometer illustrating how well the approximate red line fits the data points. | Description | The Middle School Portal 2: Math and Science Pathways (MSP2) supports middle grades educators with high-quality, standards-based resources and promotes collaboration and knowledge-sharing among its users. Educators use MSP2 to increase content knowledge in science, mathematics, and appropriate pedagogy for youth ages 10 to 15. MSP2 employs social networking and digital tools to foster dynamic experiences that promote creation, modification, and sharing of resources, facilitate professional development, and support the integration of technology into practice. MSP2 is a project of the Ohio State University College of Education and Human Ecology, National Middle School Association, and Education Development Center, Inc., and is funded by the National Science Foundation. The partners integrate resources, tools, and services across projects, and support multiple methods of resource discovery to meet the needs of this audience. |

Linear Regression Applet Description Simulation Send comments to Nicholas Exner DescriptionThis applet allows a person to add up to 50 points onto its green viewing screen. After each point is added by clicking on the screenwith the mouse, a blue best fit line will be calculated by the computer. By clicking on Show Best Fit, a red line will also appear. This red line represents a line passing through (Average x, Average y) with a slope, which can be altered by clicking the Left or Right buttons. Theslope of this line may also be changed by dragging the mouse either right or left. The thermometer on the right measures how well the red line fits the data points. If the thermometer measures a good fit (that is, small error) then the redline is a good fit to the data.. Simulation Applet Source, Written by Nicholas Exner.
