| Collection Name: | GLOBE Teacher's Guide
|
|---|
| Collection Description: | The Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) collection is an environmental science collection supporting an authentic scientifically rigorous program of Earth observations and measurements taken by students in partnership with scientists. Currently, the collection is composed mainly of teachers' guides, field guides and classroom activities that engage teachers and students in measuring protocols of different environmental variables like temperature, optical thickness, cloud cover, ozone, precipitation and water vapor. Field guides provide step-by-step instructions for data collection. Teacher materials provide instructional strategies and assessments for evaluating student progress. Activities are hands-on learning opportunities. Student resources in the collection support the National Science Education Standards. |

| Collection Name: | Middle School Portal: Math and Science Pathways (MSP2)
|
|---|
| Collection Description: | The Middle School Portal: Math and Science Pathways (MSP2) identifies digital resources that support reform-based middle school math and science teaching and learning. Its Mathematics Pathway and Science Pathway present standards-based publications that take an in-depth look at teachable concepts in math and science. All resources are examined with the following criteria in mind: content of the resource is accurate; it promotes student learning; it aligns with one or more national math and/or science education standards; it is grade-level appropriate; it promotes equity and access; and the resource is easily navigable. A blog called Connecting News to National Science Education Standards encourages science teachers to integrate current events into their instruction. Users can also search or browse by subject lists and register to be notified when new content is posted to the site. |

| Resource Title: | How Do Seasonal Temperature Patterns Vary Among Different Regions of the World?
|
|---|
| Description: | The purpose of this resource is to have students use GLOBE visualizations to display student data on maps and to learn about seasonal changes in regional and global temperature patterns. Students learn how sunlight spreads over the Earth at different times of the year, emphasizing the solstices and the equinoxes. Students investigate the effect of the Earth.s tilt on the spread of sunlight by modeling different tilts using a three-dimensional polyhedron which they construct from paper. Students calculate the relative sunlight intensity received by the Northern and Southern Hemispheres to understand seasonal differences between the hemispheres. |
