NSDL has developed a companion resource to its Hurricanes web seminar delivered on May 16, 2006 through the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Web Seminar Series. The companion resource list was developed using the Instructional Architect tool available through NSDL from Utah State University, and features links to maps, simulations, interactives, and other materials discussed during the seminar. An archive of the seminar is available through the NSTA website.

The eighth seminar (March 8th) in the series, "Chemistry Comes Alive!", showcases the resources available on the Journal of Chemical Education Online (JCE). JCE is the NSDL Chemistry Pathway, providing a collection of resources that you can find searching through NSDL. By putting chemistry in a context that students can relate to, as in the case of the seminar's topic that dealt with an activity that tests your taste buds, teachers can find resources within JCE that will enhance their classroom teaching.

The National Science Teachers Association and NSDL have partnered together for the 2006-2007 school year for a series of web seminars showcasing NSDL resources and experts from NSDL organizations. The eleventh seminar (June 19th) in the series, Selecting and Using Digital Phenomena and Representations, shows teachers ways to effectively incorporate digital resources that demonstrate scientific concepts. From simulations to tools that allow students to manipulate objects, resources in a special collection known as PRISMS, provides annotated notes on how to incorporate digital representations and phenomena in your teaching. This seminar, presented by Chad Dorsey of the Maine Math and Science Alliance (an NSDL partner) is for teachers of grades 6-9.

The first seminar in this year 2 series (September 20th) provides a special focus on careers. "Funworks: Inspiring Students to Pursue Math and Science Careers" highlights resources from the FunWorks collection of NSDL. Our expert, Sarita Nair-Pillai, Project Director at the Education Development Center will: Discuss current research in career development and the strategies used to engage middle school age audiences for the FunWorks website and its use. Demonstrate resources within the FunWorks collection: career information, interactives, and classroom activities.

Seminar 2 (October 2, 2007), "Hotspots, Plumes, and LIPs: Everything's Coming Up Igneous" allows us to study the formation of volcanoes that are derived from hotspots, areas of magma underneath the Earth's mantle.
In this presentation, researchers Dr. Anthony Koppers and Dr. Chris Symons discuss various phenomena studied in current research:
ERESE, an NSDL collection featured in this presentation and developed by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, contains resources, lesson plans, data, and other materials related to earth and oceanic science research.

For seminar 3 (October 23, 2007), "Chemistry Comes Alive II: Sticky Molecules and Folding Proteins", NSDL celebrates Mole Day by featuring Dr. John Moore, W. T. Lippincott Professor of Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and director of the Institute for Chemical Education (ICE) and Dr. Lynn Diener, Outreach Specialist, ChemEd Digital Library, University of Wisconsin-Madison as they showcase ways to engage students in the study of chemistry using digital resources. In this presentation, you'll learn about chemical properties such as: Hydrophobicity, Solubility and Protein folding.
Using video segments, lab lesson plans, activities, featured molecules and other resources within the NSDL ChemEd Digital Library, you'll be able to make chemistry come alive in your classroom!

For seminar 4 (November 13, 2007), "Studying Genomes: From the Lab to the Classroom" Dr. Rob DeSalle, author and curator in the Sackler Institute for Comparative Genomics of the American Museum of Natural History, highlighted some concepts related to current understanding and research related to genomics and evolution:What do evolutionary trees tell us? How are evolutionary trees built from genomic information? Clues from the past using the "trunk" of evolutionary trees. Closer examination of the tips of the tree of life where humans reside.

For seminar 6 (January 8, 2008), "Discover Microbial Worlds", Sarah Bordenstein, Education and Outreach Coordinator at the Marine Biological Laboratory and Dr. Seth Bordenstein, Evolutionary Geneticist at the Laboratory's Josephine Bay Paul Center provided a close-up view of bacteria and it's significance to current research and it's application in the biology classroom:
For further study, Dr. Bordenstein will be facilitating a teacher workshop that showcases the use of classroom laboratory techniques and the study of microbes (Wolbachia) at the Marine Biological Laboratory, April 11-13, 2008 for 9-12 grade educators. Deadline for registration is January 15, 2008.

For seminar 10 (April 1, 2008), It's Alive: Online Life Science Resources for the Middle School Classrooms, NSDL features our experts Chad Dorsey and Joyce Tugel, Science Specialists from the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance (MMSA).
Through MMSA's PRISMS Project (Phenomena and Representations for the Instruction of Sciences in Middle Schools), teachers can find selected, vetted, and extensively annotated references to resources for middle school curricula. PRISMS (beta version work-in-progress) saves you time to not only find quality resources, but also how to better align these resources to learning goals based on AAAS's Benchmarks for Science Literacy and the National Science Education Standards.

For seminar 12 (May 27, 2008), Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears: Integrating Science and Literacy, Seminar 1: Polar Geography, NSDL featured our experts from The Ohio State University, Jessica Fries-Gaither, Project Director for Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears and Elementary Resource Specialist at the Ohio Resource Center and Dr. Carol Landis, Education Coordinator at the Byrd Polar Research Center.
Our presenters provided an overview of the geography of the Arctic and Antarctic regions and featured resources from the Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears cyberzine, a resource for elementary educators. This cyberzine focuses on strategies and content to integrate science and literacy through the study of the polar regions.

They shared content resources, lesson plans, and children's literature from the Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears cyberzine related to science concepts related to the study of water, ice, solids, liquids and gases, and the formation of glaciers.

For seminar 4 (December 9, 2008), Chemistry Comes Alive III: Water, NSDL featured our experts Dr. John Moore, W. T. Lippincott Professor, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Director of the Institute for Chemical Education; Dr. Lynn Diener, Assistant Professor at Mount Mary College; and Dr. James Skinner J. O. Hirschfelder Professor, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Director of the Theoretical Chemistry Institute.
This seminar focused on the chemical properties of water: it's molecular and chemical structure, and some of the current research related to the analysis of water. Participants learned also learned about resources from the NSDL Chemical Education Pathway, ChemEDDL to incorporate these concepts of water and more in their teaching through videos, an interactive periodic table, demonstrations, and teaching activities.

For seminar 5 (January 28, 2009), Media Literacy in the 21st Century, NSDL featured our experts Daniella Quiñones, Marketing Coordinator for WGBH Teachers' Domain and Dr. Russanne Low, Senior Research Associate at the University of Colorado, CCB, INSTAAR.
With the large volume of materials available online, learning how to assess and validate resources from reliable sources becomes an important 21st century school for both educators and students. This seminar examines media literacy, what it means and ways to develop your skills in selecting resources based on categories of authorship, currency, timeliness, organizational focus, and more.

Engineers work on solving problems and needs that can be readily found in our daily lives. Teaching students about engineering careers and incorporating engineering activities that demonstrate the design process can inspire students to pursue engineering careers as well as provide a means of incorporating inquiry and problem-based learning into your teaching. For seminar 7 (April 21, 2009), NSDL featured our experts Jennifer Fee, BirdSleuth Project Leader for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology; Colleen McLinn, Outreach Associate for the Macaulay Library of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology; and Jessica Fries-Gaither, Project Director and Elementary Resource Specialist at Ohio State University.
Studying birds provides opportunities for inquiry teaching and a context for students to collect data and observations of the natural world. Our presenters highlighted educational resources from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology as well as strategies to study of birds of the polar regions with literacy and reading goals in mind. These resources are a part of the February 2009 issue of Beyond Penguins and Polar Bears, a cyberzine for teacher professional development.
